On Sun ( 8th of July) several members of VCI travelled to compete in the Moynalty GP. One in particular travelled in search of a targeted one point, which would be enough for promotion from A4 to A3. Colin Abernathy and Mark Johnston took to the start line with around 50 others. A field maybe slightly reduced by the knowledge of one particular climb around the mid point of each circuit. As ever, it was fast paced with a spiky feel to things until nervous energy expelled and things settled down a little, Rhythm established or so it was thought, when first time on to the main climb split the field completely, however, with a fast downhill and many keen to work back to the main group, most were back into the bunch. On the second lap which was also the final lap, there was a pretty nasty crash around the middle of the bunch. Around 20 of the better placed riders made it safely onwards and resumed the work needed to stay away.
As the final lap progressed a further 5 is so bridged over in the hope of contesting the closing finish. At this point Colin had been caught behind the crash, whilst Jonto had got through safely with the leaders, with this notably his first outing on his new disc shod. Final time up what was a nasty climb, levelling out in the middle before kicking up again, there was a split similar to the first lap, which allowed around 15 to break clear. From the 15 remaing, 2 riders attacked and pulled clear to contest the win. Fighting hard, with that one point needed Jonto and a few others pulled all the way to the line for a sprint for 3rd. With great satisfaction we can confirm Jonto positioned 4th in the race giving him the points needed to upgrade to A3.
Mark now moves up to join good friend John Davidson whom promoted only a month or so ago himself. Massive well done to Mark from all in VCI. A worthy result for a very popular contributor in any field.
