Unfortunately for this years Iveagh 50 we didnt have the weather on our side and that was the resulting factor on the lower numbers than normal for this event. We had a total of 62 riders sign on and that total was split across the short and longer routes.
Once signed on the riders enjoyed coffee/tea and biscuits before they set of, while they enjoyed this we had mechanics from chain reaction cycles there to make any repairs and tweaks to their bikes which a few people took advantage of.
10am came and it was time for the Chairmans speech which is basically a safety briefing for the riders explaining the route and outlining where marshals and water stops are etc
Keel Wheelers motor cycle club lead the riders out of the rugby club car park they would marshal both routes along with the VCI static marshals to ensure the event ran safe and smooth with no incidents.
We also had 2 broom wagons which would also follow the riders along each route short and long and in one of those broom wagons we had Charlotte from St John Ambulance which is our chosen charity this year, reports back at HQ was we only had one mechanical, the chain reaction van helped out with this one which was a puncture which resulted in the rider needing a new tyre fitted to continue.
Once back at the rugby club the riders had a wide variety of recover food on offer, chef Cartmill was flipping burgers on the BBQ with his assistants Claire and Jenny keeping him right, there was also soup and a roll on offer along with many cakes, buns and biscuits to satisfy the sweet tooths!
We would like to thank all of our helpers and marshals because without them the event would not be able to run, Thanks to the pre-event organizers, static and motorcycle marshals, broom-wagon, water-stop crew, CRC Mechanics and St John first aid who braved the weather to keep everyone safe. Thanks also to the kitchen staff who prepared and served the food on return. Not forgetting those who turned up to ride, in what wasn’t the most ideal weather conditions. Thanks to all riders Banbridge CC, Dromore CC, Phoenix CC, Madigan CC, Skydive Dubai, Northdown CC, BCC Camlough, SMCC, Dromara CC, Apollo, and our own Velo Club Iveagh leisure crew.
