The first race in this year’s race league, a 2 Up Time Trial using Road Bikes was run in almost perfect race conditions. The evening was dull owing to heavy clouds, but essentially, it remained dry throughout. The temperature was a reasonable 10c and with only a mild headwind on the return it seemed a promising evening for some fast times.
Popular with many, tonight’s venue was the Rathfriland Rd, ,and the distance was the standard 10 miles. It was a good turn out (29) and an encouraging start to the season, with 13 pairings taking part in this team event with a further two singles going off using the opportunity as training.
At club level, with confidence on a high and racing strongly in many members priorities, times and competition was always likely to be hard fought, with a club pecking order an unspoken agenda. With handicaps in place, 5 pairings went off chasing target times. Fastest ride was quite a surprise and sharply highlights the benefits of hard winter mileage and training. Mark Johnston now known as a strong Time Trialist was paired with William Strain whom has/is now showing huge potential. The pair ripped it up with a time of 24.52 (38.61kmph) Pushing hard and another pair showing increased performance in second place were Johnny Burns and Ronnie Massey with a very creditable 25.27 (37.71 kmph) Third place was Gordy Brown and Josh Daly and although with an actual time of 25.09 (38.17kmph) and quicker than Johnny and Ronnie, lost out on handicap (see race results for full breakdown).
A very warm welcome was given to visiting competitors, with club representation from Apollo CT, SMCC and TVR. Posting the second fastest time of the night 24.57 and the quickest in our visitors league were Rory and Fergal of Apollo. Their time was just over a minute quicker than second in our visitors competition Mark and Conor of TVR with a time of 25.58. Close behind were third place Gordon and Jonathon of SMCC with a time of 26.01.
Our thanks as always to those whom have supported our events and to all our marshals, timekeepers and assistants whom ran a smooth and enjoyable event
